Much like many other factory parts in your engine, the crank pulley is a wear-item with a shelf-life. The rubber pieces in the factory damper can deteriorate over time, causing a failure that could result in pistons hitting the valves, and destroying your engine. Also, factory crank pulleys were designed to operate at a certain speed and maximum rpm. When racing an engine, we often rev it higher than it was designed to from the factory, pushing many of the factory parts past their design criteria closer to failure.
For this reason, many sanctioned race classes require an "SFI Approved" crank pulley/damper, and will not even allow factory crank pulleys through inspection. ATI has designed a 5.5” damper -- Part # 918522 -- for the '94 - '05 Mazda Miata 2.0L engine for high horsepower street & race use. This new design is a direct replacement for the stock OEM damper. The heart of this unit is the tried and true “damper within a damper” design that has put ATI ahead of the rest. The outer shell is machined to utilize the factory serpentine belt set-up.
This part number includes the belt guide for the timing gear to be used if you do not have a trigger wheel. If you have a trigger wheel, please purchase part number 918522 from us instead.
